    The Other “L” Word “You used to be such a good Republican”. Never in my life did I ever expect those words to be directed towards me, or to come from somebody as familiar as my father. My simple and seemingly harmless comment about a local news story on Channel 6 seemed to have struck a chord with him. As I stood and let his remark wash over me, I attempted to justify my immediate reaction: offense. To be honest, I wasn’t offended by this off-hand statement; I was merely confused by what prompted it. When had I ever declared myself a Republican? Or a Democrat for that matter? After having spaced out for more than the socially acceptable number of seconds, I decided that this seemingly innocent comment needed to be examined deeper in the solitude of my bedroom. I left my perplexed father behind in the living room and marched up the stairs to my dirty-laundry ridden bedroom. I threw myself onto my unkempt bed and began to wonder; was my dad right? It began when all I wanted for my fifteenth birthday was a membership to the NRA. An unconventional choice, I will admit, but for a daughter whose only dream in life was to make her father proud, it made perfect sense. My parents, who are two of the most Conservative people I know, raised me to be independent. They have told me from the very start to be my own person and develop my own opinions.
