    we would also play chess furiously, inventing (so we thought) new chess variations and talk about books and again drinking chicha, an andean fermented maize beverage, in our “Chicherias.” Each sip of chicha went along with our thanks to the Inca gods, (mainly the sun) and the mountains, Apus as we call them. We would start drinking chicha by spilling it to the ground as a salutation to the Inca deities. It was a ritual, our own Andean cultural trait. We were similarly curious and exploring like our Mexican counterparts, walking a similar youthful awakening. So there in the highlands of Peru our young souls were not much different like, lets say, from other literary rebellious characters. Holden Caufield of the Catcher of the Rye is an example. We were all searching in Cusco and Mexico City or as is the case of the savage detectives, for a missing poet.
