The usefulness of marketing for media and entertainment companies such as Disney in regards to Toy Story 3. Marketing can be defined as “the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably;" (The Chartered Institute Of Marketing, 2016). Marketing is a key aspect to establishing the success of a business and its products especially for an organisation such as Disney. The Encyclopaedia Britannica (2015) describes Disney as a company that bases and targets its products and most of its associations on household amusement. It was founded by Walt Disney and his brother Roy in 1923 as a cartoon studio which later grew and it was at this point that it purchased subsidiaries such as Pixar in 2006. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica (2016) the leading animation studio known as Pixar animation studios were established in the 1970’s at the New York Institute of Technology by a group of computer scientists. They began to collaborate with Disney in 1989 with smaller projects such as commercials and advertisement and later animation films such as Snow white and Toy story which were a success; this went on until its purchase in 2006. The Economist (2014) identifies Toy Story 3 to historically be one of Disney Pixar’s leading earning animation films with more than $1 billion worth of earnings (Economist, 2014).
