about the scenery and events he is experiencing. While in Missoula, there is some variance in sentence structure, but the majority is straight and to the point mirroring his reporter-like attitude toward this subject. This style and attitude is rightfully so since most of the events discussed would better not be explained in extensive detail. He keeps an air of professionality in this book; he does not hide anything in flamboyant language. This same feeling of straightforwardness is also seen in Into Thin Air. In extremely emotional parts of the book, Krakauer does not try to dramatize this situation but instead is very direct with what happened. This use of concrete diction is seen when he writes “attempts to make radio contact with Hall… went unanswered [and they found him] buried beneath a drift of snow” (Krakauer 247). This emotionless account of Hall’s death shows Krakauer’s attempt to distance himself from the situation and it mimics his detached style in Missoula. In these two variations of Jon Krakauer’s style, he effectively and engagingly tells a story that was begging to be told. He not only reports stories that need to be brought to light, but he urges the reader to take action against the events he recounts. And although Krakauer’s style morphs when facing a dissimilar topic, his ability to narrate a complex topic is not…

The hallway is lit by a single light attached to the middle of the popcorn ceiling. There used to be two lights but one bulb flickered and died leaving the hallway dim. The popcorn ceiling is picked off and gone in some spots, mostly around the light and close to the walls. There are also a few tan stains that are darker around the edges and lighter almost white as they go in. The stains might be water stains from who ever lived in the house before. The flooring in the hallway is a worn dark…

I urged him to talk to me. “Ne!” he harked back at me, as best he could. His mood had changed. He pulled his hand away from the puddle clutching the pencil, and he scribbled…

quiet that comes with the snowfall when every living animal is hiding at home where it’s warm. The Dungeon looked like hell but felt like Heaven. This was one ritual that she didn’t understand the point of. There were many in her community, all of which had practical purposes.
