A 2008 campus climate survey at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse found that the University responds appropriately to these events but fails to promote ways to eliminate recurrences. Our goal is to gather our own research in order to interpret the campus climate relating to free speech and discover ways to better respond to these events. Purpose Our research will help the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse's Academic Affairs Office and Campus Climate Office better understand student attitudes toward free speech and student opinions about how the university should respond to controversial incidents. Our campus-wide survey provides valuable information regarding students and free speech. Issues of free speech are important to our group, and especially the University, because universities are meant to expose students to diverse surroundings to foster growth as individuals and citizens. Our research objectives are: 1. Assess students' attitudes towards free speech. 2. Determine how common it is for students to be directly affected by free speech controversies on campus. 3. Determine how willing students are to engage in free speech. 4. Discover if students believe that the university responds to incidents appropriately. In our survey, we define "free speech" as statements, actions, and/or events that take place among peers or among the public and could be seen as offensive.…
