Rembrandt is one artist that consistently graces top ten artists list. He is continuously called a master and a genius, a view that he himself promoted and was inspired by, as viewed through his grand self-portraits. By viewing how Rembrandt represented himself throughout his art, we see how he wanted us to admire in him later in history. His realistic portraiture, use of light, imagination, and most importantly his first name all support this view. Like many great artists, in all forms, Rembrandt used his life as an influence and inspiration for his art, and although this may have done this purposefully, arguably much of it was unconscious. Supporting the flowing art market and the popularity of his portraits, Rembrandt van Rijn sold his (what is being called) Aristotle with a Bust of Homer. It is known that the piece was originally purchased in by the prince of Sicily, Don Antonio Ruffo, but whether it was also commissioned by him is unknown. Regardless, the illustrations in the imitative portrait appear to be of Rembrandt’s whole decision. Shown is a deeply pensive, abstracted Aristotle with his hand on a bust of the late-poet…

“Self portrait” painted in 1640, only a few years after this, shows evidence of what these changes might have meant to the 34 year old Rembrandt and is painted for an entirely different purpose to that of plate 6. Plate 7 is markedly different and appears to be an artistic statement of confidence and strength. Rembrandt’s gaze is fixed firmly on the viewer, and his face and expression well lit and proudly worn. The shyness and uncertainty that characterize plate 6 are long gone and instead are…

The reading states that the painting known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet might not be the work of Rembrandt and gives three reasons of support. However, the professor refutes each of the reasons given by the reading and supports the idea that the portrait is, indeed, Rembrandt's original work. First, the reading claims that the woman in the portrait is dressed inconsistently. She is wearing both items that servants would wear and items that servants could not even afford.…
