Volunteering at the Relay for Life at Central Michigan University as an undergraduate student is a rewarding experience. This organization provides countless incredible opportunities and assistance in regards to cancer research, patients, and to the families of those affected by the fight against or loss to cancer. An uncle of mine lost his battle to pancreatic cancer. His doctor told him he had three months to live at the time of his diagnosis, but fortunately was granted four. Another uncle lost his ongoing battle with colon cancer a few years later. His unfortunate circumstance was drawn out for nearly two years. Cancer takes the lives of countless individuals each year, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or geographic location. These reasons and experiences facilitated my desire to become involved with the Relay for Life and assisted my desire to fund-raise for the necessary research and support. As a college student, financial insecurities hindered my ability donate considerable amounts of money myself. Instead, it was my pleasure to aid in the functioning of our booth at the relay. Snow cones, baked goods, and bracelets are some of the staple items our booth sold during…

Body 2: Clearly state why Relay is formed around a utopian impulse and why someone might interpret it as a utopia. Anyone who attends Relay for Life or hears about Klatt’s mission, immediately become inspired to be apart of this remarkable organization. Dr. Gordy once said “Relayers make the money. The money funds the research. Research kills cancer. Therefore relayers kill cancer!” He also said and believed that “Relayers around the world will make a difference.” Relay for Life is the epitome…

As a high school student, I believed the myth that I was just a teenager, that I couldn't make a significant change in the world or in my school. The belief that I couldn't influence the world caused me to hold my tongue when I saw unmet needs. At my school, there are no social events and the majority of our students are bused in from other cities. We tend to lack a sense of community because unless you're on a sports team, there's no reason to stay after school with friends. This was an unmet…

The first photo is of someone taking part in walking laps during Relay for Life. The image only having one person walking can show that cancer can sometimes be isolating. In addition, the isolation can come from feeling the inability to share the experience with others which is important to Relay for Life to reduce. The photo displays important aspects of relay for life and the experience of someone with cancer. The next photo depicts the walk during Relay for Life as well, but instead of one…

their life. This event, Relay for Life, creates an unparalleled environment for community involvement at Grand Valley and, for one night brings people together to make a difference in the world by helping find a cure for cancer. I joined Relay For Life because my overzealous biology teacher kept pushing it and I was an eager freshman wanting to pad my application for college. I didn’t know that Relay For Life was apart of the American Cancer Society, I didn’t know that my high school was one of the 150 high school’s in the nation to have their own relay but I knew, the minute the lights went down and the luminaria lit up the track, that I wanted to be apart of this. Even as a freshman I knew I wanted to go to college.…
