In the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Arnold a 9th grader stands up for his culture and takes on a higher academic education. But for him to do this, he needs to leave the reservation and go to a rich white school. Even though some of his friends and family think he is betraying their tribe, this is an incentive for him, he's showing everyone that he can stand up for himself and that he can be successful in life. Arnold shows courage for going to Reardon because he goes even though people call him a traitor and even though he's an outsider when he gets there. Arnold's community treats him like an outsider now for making this bold choice. They're angry at him for deciding that he can get a better education than everyone else. People in his tribe grew up thinking that they weren't as smart and couldn’t be as successful as the white people around them. When Arnold decides this, he thinks that everyone will be grateful that he is taking this risk and standing up for himself. He wants to be an example for other people on the reservation.
