experience what their peers does on holidays, what they eat at home, and what language they hear the most. Their names may sound strange for local people. Jhumpa Lahiri, the writer of the novel The Namesake, is also a child of immigrants in America. In the novel, Lahiri depicts the struggle of a child of immigrants, particularly Gogol Ganguli, has throughout his life. Gogol’s perception towards his name symbolize his struggle for identifying himself surrounded by both Indian and American cultures. As a young boy, Gogol does not mind his “pet” name. So does he live well between the two cultures. When he is young, his mother exposes him in both Indian and American cultures. Ashima educates him to memorize poets by a famous Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore, to worship Hindu goddess Durga, and to take Bengali language lessons every other week (Lahiri 54, 65). On the other hand, she also teaches him to watch American TV shows to “keep up with the English he uses at nursery school,” to celebrate Thanksgiving, Easter, and the birth of Christ (Lahiri 54, 64). It seems Gogol follows all the conventions and customs surrounding him. He is not confused by the difference of two cultures when he is little. He accepts his name as well. When he is in the kindergarten, he rejects to be Nikhil (Lahiri 57). Instead, he signs up for the kindergarten with the name Gogol (Lahiri 59). In other words, he “doesn't mind his name (Lahiri 66).” Thus, when Gogol is little, his approval for his name…

Rabindranath Tagore once said, “You can’t cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water.” I believe that there is a lot of hidden meaning behind those thirteen simple words. To me, this quote is saying that you aren’t going to get anywhere in life if you don’t try. That means that every once in awhile you should step out of your comfort zone and experience the world through a different lens, or from a different perspective. I fully agree with Rabindranath Tagore. I think that is…
