In the following critical essay, we will utilize a ten-point checklist to evaluate an article entitled Measure the Immeasurable: The World of Smell and Taste (“MIM”). This ten-point checklist has been applied against Six Sigma project case studies. MIM is not a case study by definition, but more of a look at industries’ use of new electronic measurement techniques and the influence they can have on and the opportunities they present to companies and teams using the DMAIC. More specifically,…
such as the telescope, microscope, barometer, and thermometer also allowed scientists to discover laws of nature that had eluded earlier scientists. All of this led to a continuous increase in scientific experimentation. Galileo believed in the quantification of science and emphasized that natural philosophy can never answer the questions of reality with certainty. He believed that mathematics provided the mind with the certainty it seeks. His inclined plane experiments showed that a body…
an offense invariable followed by a flogging to be found at the quarters after daybreak.” For time off, “incidental labors” such as “drawing and cutting wood, pressing cotton fattening and killing hogs” burdened any spare time. To Northrup, quantification of the hours worked to calculate any reparations would be almost impossible. “Incidental labors” would not necessarily be counted towards a slaves daily tasks on a…
In this study, we developed an anthracene-based fluorescence PET sensor (AMG) was developed for detecting high pH values and water content in organic solvents. A guanidine group as a proton receptor was covalently attached to an anthracene fluorophore to afford highly polar AMG, with reasonable solubility in highly basic solution. The fluorescence of AMG increased almost linearly with decreasing pH in the range 11.0–13.0. AMG also exhibited a fluorescence turn-on response to water in various…
Asset pricing theories help us to find out risks of assets and provide us with a framework to associate risks of assets with their expected returns. A large number of theories and models have been prevailed to relate the risk and return of various assets to aid practitioners in selecting investment portfolio. These theories include Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT) and the Capital Assets Pricing Model (CAPM). The Arbitrage Pricing Theory is a theory developed by Stephen Ross (1976) and was later…
1. Introduction Lernaea infection is a major disease problem encountered in carp culture in the Indian subcontinent and has been reported from Indian major carps Catla (Catla catla), Rohu (Labeo rohita), Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) , exotic carps silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and indigenous carps Labeo fimbriatus (Nandeesha et al., 1984, 1985; Tamuli and Shanbhouge, 1996; Zafar et al., 2001). The three Indian Major Carps viz., Catla, Rohu and…
Currently, Dr. Rong Lu conducts research at the University of Southern California (USC). Her lab investigates stem cell malfunction, regulation, and coordination at the single cell level (1). Furthermore, she uses mouse hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) as a model system (1). Dr. Lu’s research utilize various disciplines of biology such as molecular, cellular, and systems biology (1). Additionally, Dr. Lu’s research focuses on investigating the differences and coordination between individual stem…
directly associated with the purchase and production of an eligible asset (KPMG.com, 2015). The used criteria under both the set standards defining the qualifying assets are similar. However, there are differences between the accounting models in the quantification of qualified borrowing costs for capitalization. Under GAAP, differences in the exchange rate are not included in the qualified borrowing costs whereas, under IFRS, the differences in exchange rates are included in the qualified…
The legality of elective abortion, or a woman's right to choose, has been an issue for almost two centuries, since at least 1821 when Connecticut passed the first statute criminalizing abortion (Cole & Frankowski, 1987). The biggest argument people against abortion use is freedom of religion and the sanctity of life, but another large factor is that of the mental health of those women who do choose to abort their fetuses. Research by Coleman (2011) suggested that abortion is linked to a moderate…
The Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, summed up his assessment of the 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) in the following statement: “With our “ends” fixed and our “means” declining, it is therefore imperative that we innovate within the “ways” we defend the Nation.” Strategic planning and transition to Joint Force 2020 (JF 2020) in a fiscally constrained environment affords DoD senior leaders the opportunity to be more innovative than ever before in assessing and…
