Heather Reinders (ID 0228852): - Assignment One: French Songs After reading the assignment requirements, I was originally unsure of how to tackle such an open-ended assignment; with no specific goals posted I decided to create my own. A large part of why I want to learn to speak French isn’t just because we are a bilingual nation or because it will increase employment prospects after University; it was to start to learn and appreciate French culture. Growing up in the Guelph area we were never exposed to French culture. In a way, we miss out on a large portion of truly Canadian culture when we limit ourselves to our native English language. Music has a way of opening the door to other cultures; so with this assignment I decided to use it as an opportunity to really explore the musical aspects of French culture as opposed to just selecting the first pop artists to appear in my web browser. I decided to look for three unique criteria: 1. The artist must sing and record original songs. I wanted to stay away from manufactured artists who sang songs written by their record label; 2. Critical acclaim: The artist must have won awards and had critical success with the album the song was recorded on; 3. The artist must be known as a cultural driver in their native area. The first artist I looked at is a Canadian artist named Béatrice Martin. She performs under the stage name Coeur de Pirate. Born in Montreal in 1989, she has been credited with bringing French Canadian music…

Ottawa’s efforts still did not lessen from Québec’s stubborn refusal. In 1987, PM Brian Mulroney attempted to accomplish Trudeau’s career-long wish: get Québec to sign the Constitution. These efforts took the name of the Meech Lake Accord. When Québec refused to sign the Constitution in 1981, it estranged itself from the Canadian “constitutional family”. During constitutional discussions, Québec made many proposals whose acceptance would have led to its addition to the Constitution. The accord…

I waited with my cellphone in hand as one, two, three rings, and finally…“Hey Lily!” a familiar voice greeted, his tone friendly and confident as always. In the background, one could hear the quiet rumble of his car as he made his way from work, back home to his family. I couldn’t help but smile as I responded back. I was excited to be talking with a close family friend again, and he was one who always kept the conversation intellectual, yet stimulating. Every time we talked, his discussions…
