“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” These words of Winston Churchill highlight the importance of change in one’s character. In Groundhog Day, Phil recognizes how growth is an important factor in one’s life. In addition, I also have acknowledged its importance. Both Phil and I pursue personal growth through the use of free will. In Groundhog Day, Phil develops new skills, talents and virtues through the use of free will to grow and change. For example, he learned how to play the piano, how to ice sculpt, and how to fix a flat tire. By acquiring new skills, he became “versatile” as he and his colleague Rita called it. As a versatile person, he could help numerous people in their various plights and become altruistic in instead of egocentric. Rather than continue focusing on himself, Phil used his free will to focus on the needs of others. At first, this complete reversal of behavior bemuses Rita, but then she realizes this altruistic virtue is the result of a true change of heart. Those who are not caught up in their own world tend to be more personable and admired by others. Through his own free will, Phil has molded himself into a versatile, altruistic character. Similar to Phil, I have pursued personal growth in my education, work, relationships and personal life. When it comes to my education, I strive to have the best grades I can possibly have.
