The poets introduce Coates to the Prince George’s County police, they refer to the area as PG County. To them PG County policeman are not men and women of justice, they were gangsters and gunmen just disguised in a uniform; the uniform had given them all the power to insight their own agenda on the population (Coates, 53). Coates then begins talking about the women that started to flow in and out of his life, all leaving a mark on Coates, a lasting impression. With his first love he reminisces on his ignorance, “What I remember is my ignorance. I remember watching her with her hands and feeling uncivilized with my fork. I remember wondering why she wore so many scares. I remember her going to India for spring break and returning with a bindi on her head and photos her smiling Indian cousins. I told her ‘Nigga, you black,’ because that’s all I had back then.” (Coates, 57-58). This memory comes to the front, it is the idea that black is not the defining label. Just because she was black does not mean she did not have other cultures. He speaks about other women that wander in and out of his life, and of a man named Prince Jones. Coates speaks about Prince Jones in an admiring fashion, describing the features and actions of him in a way that made him live up to his namesake (Coates 64). His last love at Howard is his son’s…
