Primes – the building blocks of all numbers: The dictionary meaning of prime is ‘Of first importance’ or ‘Of the best quality, excellent’ etc. What is so great about prime numbers? A number is said to be a prime if it is divisible only by 1 and itself. 5, for example, is a prime number because it is divisible only by 1 and 5. The number 4 can be divided by 1, 4 AND 2. So it is not a prime number. Numbers that are not primes are said to be composite numbers. The fundamental theorem of Arithmetic states that all numbers are either primes or a product of a unique combination of primes. So in a way the prime numbers are the building blocks for all numbers. Hence the name Prime. Prime numbers have various applications, but perhaps the best reason why Mathematicians study them is that they are extremely basic and mysterious at the same time. It’s amazing how little we know about primes after reflecting on them for thousands of years. Prime numbers were first studied extensively by Greek mathematicians. Euclid, a Greek Mathematician who lived around 300 BC and was known as the…

The formula is written like this, (a + 1)(b + 1)….(z + 1) where a, b, …., z are considered to be the exponents of prime number. So looking at 225 we know that it has prime numbers 2 and 5 with a exponent of 2 next to the 2. So using our formula we will now use (2 + 1)(1 + 1) = (3)(2) = 6. Now when we’re looking at this there are many different possibilities of factors of 20. When looking at the term 20 of quadratic equation we can see that it could be ±1, ±2, ±4, ±5, ±10, and ±20. So now when we…

from exponentiation of some numbers and modulo of a prime number but they left open the problem realizing a one-way function. One-way function is a mathematical function that is significantly easier to compute in one direction (the forward direction) than in the opposite direction (the inverse direction). To create a one-way function that is difficult to invert is the aim of the three inventors of the RSA. Rivest and Shamir were computer scientists while Adleman is a mathematician. While both…

It Makes Sense Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Night-time has one reoccurring theme that he has highlighted throughout the novel, Logic. He illustrates this by his sentence structure and by showing the way Christopher, the protagonist, processes everything by using and needing concrete facts or patterns and various structures to justify his different conclusions he arrives at throughout the novel, also on how each chapter is labeled with prime numbers. Haddon does not do anything…

Germain had a challenging start to her career, she was persistent, ambitious, and determined; these qualities, as well as her work in mathematics, made her hard to ignore. Sophie Germain began her career by attempting to solve Fermat’s Last Theorem which states that “xn + yn = zn has no positive integer solutions for x, y, z when n > 2” (Riddle). Germain worked relentlessly on proving this theorem and eventually believed had she solved it. Her conclusion was this: “for each odd prime exponent…
