For thousands of years, men have desired to gain power over others so that they can accomplish their own goals. Thus, it has become human nature to desire power and control. Most often men would try to gain as much power they could possibly have by bending the rules or laws that have been put in place that would restrict them. If the rules and laws that kept the amount of power in balance were suddenly removed, the men would be the first to realize it. Their methods for obtaining more power would exponentially grow more immoral and more aggressive. However, these men that take their desire for power to this extent are the ones who are generally insecure about themselves and feel weak and worthless towards others. In the book Lord of the Flies,…

The Power of Death After reading Shakespeare’s play Othello, one can easily conclude that it is primarily about jealousy and revenge. One of my favorite quotes is “Man is the only creature who refuses to be what he is”. As the boys come onto my island, some of them decide to hold back or change themselves to gain a following. This applies to two boys in particular. Piggy, who believes that if he hides his intelligence he will be able to shield himself from shrewdness from the other boys. Also Jack who is under the impression that if he becomes aggressive and an “alfa” figure on the island he will gain a following from the…

In William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar Mark Antony’s speech is more persuasive than the one Brutus gives because he uses better tactics and more powerful rhetoric. In his speech Brutus uses gravitas and ethos which in the end backfires because it makes his speech less relatable and portrays him as better than the plebeians. Mark Antony gives his speech after Brutus and he uses this to his advantage by using verbal irony and more specially sarcasm. Mark Antony uses pathos and exaggeration to…

An example of propaganda being used in Animal Farm is when Squealer states that “No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal” (Orwell, 37). This quote is very misleading since the animals know that Napoleon just wants to have overall power, however, Squealer is trying to manipulate them by exaggerating Napoleon’s abilities and his point of view. For this reason, even if the animals didn’t understand Squealer’s speech they would still fall into his trap since he…
