    key factor for the short story. Imagery is a word or phrase that appeals to the reader’s sense (A Glossary Of Literary Terms). In the story, the author uses imagery to set up a time, place,or mood by giving out a date, people’s feeling, and locations to the readers. For instance, the author sets up a place and mood on line 9 of “ The Lottery’’ by saying, “School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them”(Jackson). In other words, the author set up a time and place to the readers. By this I mean, how the author thought ahead and gave a location to which a crime was going to be committed. Additionally, the author also uses this device in line 3-4 of the story by writing, “. . .between the post office and the bank, . . . the lottery began at ten o'clock” (Jackson). In the same way as the first example the author gives out an important key items in order to let the readers understand what is going on and where the situation is occurring. As a result, the author also lets the reader feel the character’s feeling by showing how Mrs.Hutchinson was pleading for her daughter’s life, yet no one in the village tried to stop the situation on the last line of the story by saying. ““It isn’t fair, it isn't right,” Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon Tessie.”(Jackson) Equally important, The author uses characterization as a important literary device for the story.
