In 1997 Adrian Raine conducted a study that focused on brain abnormalities in murderers that were shown by the use of positron emission tomography (PET). “The aim of his experiment was to see if murderers who pleaded not guilty by the reason of insanity (NGRI) showed signs of brain abnormalities with PET scans. Raine used 41 participants, 39 of which were male and 2 of which were females. The prisoner’s reasons for insanity varied. Six said they were schizophrenic, 23 said it was due to a head injury, 3 blamed drug abuse, 2 claimed it was an affective disorder, 2 gave the excuse of epilepsy, 3 said the insanity was due to hyperactivity or learning difficulties, and 2 claimed to have a personality disorder. There was a control group that was also selected.…

Positron emission tomography (PET): is an anatomically based measurement that utilizes small radioactive tracers that are able to identify and determine glucose and metabolic levels within the organs of the body. This type of tomography could be used in a concussion assessment to determine the metabolic activities and glucose levels of the brain, as these levels are important and often become altered following a concussion. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI): is an anatomically…

A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is an imaging test used by doctors to check for the disease in the patient's body. This PET scan also can use to measure blood flow, oxygen use and can detect cancer, heart problems, brain disorders and another. PET scans use radioactive materials called tracers to find diseases in the body and it will shows how organs and tissues are working. Stacy Simon reported annual statistics reporting from the American Cancer Society shows the death rate from…

which allows the nucleus to move into a stable and lower energy state and are emitted with beta and alpha particles. As well as the emission of particles, radioisotopes also release antimatter in the form of positrons, neutrino and anti-neutrinos. Positrons and neutrinos are emitted during β+ decay when the nucleus has too few neutrons to be stable and the proton rearranges its energy. As seen in the diagram below positrons are the anti of electrons. The emission of positrons is essential…

radionuclides. In the mid- 20th century medical radionuclide production highly used reactors, accelerators and cyclotrons. Among the 1500 nuclides that are available, reactor-produced radionuclides are usually electron rich. This property result for the nuclides to decay by β negative emission that was used for cancer therapy. Some reactor-produced radionuclides were used for nuclear medicine imaging. The other aspect of medical radionuclide production was cyclotron-produced…

unified set of theories in psychology that can explain the mental activity because the mind is one of the most sophisticated and complex organ to study and analyze. Neuroscience and clinical psychology have often moved in parallel, avoiding as much as possible points of contact but still moving very often to the same direction because they are anchored to each other having a common object of study: the human mind related to the human behavior. Many research attempts entering the dialogue between…

TIME Magazine named the PET scan the medical invention of the year in 2000, and Dr. David Townsend and Dr. Ronald Nutt are credited as the individuals behind the paramount device. A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is a nuclear medicine imaging test that aids in revealing how well a human’s organs and tissues are functioning; the scan can measure an individual’s oxygen use, glucose metabolism, blood flow and much more. The significance of this function is monumental as it essentially…

small blockages in coronary arteries. CTA is so great that doctors can rule in or out significant heart disease in a matter of minutes with a 95% accuracy rate. Echocardiography is another detector involving ultrasound to evaluate the functions of heart muscle and valves. There are three types of echocardiographies: portable echo, 3-dimensional echo, and intracardiac echo. Cardiac MRI is a third type of detection of heart disease that surpasses the echocardiography and stress test by showing…

additional images while the IV is in or after they take it out. When you are done you will be asked to wait and they will take the IV out. It usually takes 30-50 minutes to complete the exam. Another type of MRI is the Functional MRI or fMRI. fMRI measures the change of blood flow to different parts of your brain. When you look at an image of a fMRI the yellow parts show increased activity in your brain. Functional MRI is a “functional neuroimaging procedure.” Neuro relates to the nervous system…
