He is commissioned to not only create a portrait of Pope Paul V, but he is also given the opportunity to create a piece for St. Peter's Basilica, a massive honor. The papal portrait is far more restrained than his typical style. This is probably because the Pope was very conventional in comparison to his nephew. This sense of assertiveness is portrayed brilliantly in the subject’s posture and facial expression…
control the people’s “religious freedom,” much like the opposition trying to control the marchers. The Catholic Counter Reformation took place during the exact time of the Pilgrimage of Grace. Pope Paul III did not implement anything new but did try to reform the church by the use of the existing doctrine. This was Pope Paul’s response to those who were Protestant and those wanting reforms in the church. In the Catholic Counter Reformation the same issue from here and the Pilgrimage of Grace…
Pope in Nicaragua In 1983 Pope John Paul II made a short visit to Nicaragua for about eleven hours. Everybody was very anxious for the arrival of the pontiff. They also were curious about the speech that Pope II was going to pronounce. All, Christian, Catholics, and even people who didn’t practice any religion, members of the church or not, they were anxiously getting ready to welcome the pontiff. According to Envio- a digital magazine- “for more than a month, the Nicaraguan…
History is ripe with tales of traitors and treason, especially when one group is unhappy with another. Take, for example, John Brown’s three day raid on Harper’s Ferry in Virginia. Angry with the lack of progress in the abolition movement, Brown planned to take the military’s stockpiled arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia and use it to free slaves across the south (“John Brown’s”). Or maybe think about the more realistic 20 July Plot during World War II. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg and some…
Catholic Church has had to deal with in its ecumenical dialogue with other Christian churches is the Dogma of Papal Infallibility. This dogma was officially promulgated by Pope Pius IX at the First Vatican Council (1869-1870) in the Dogmatic Constitution Pastor Aeternus. This magisterial document defined the role and ministry of the pope within the Church. In their attempt to define the Petrine office, the Council Fathers at Vatican I unknowingly opened a ‘can of worms’ that would,…
or threat to the mother’s life occurred the person could kick out the burglar, or terminate the pregnancy. She can do this because she has a right to life equally as important as a baby. This solution can also be argued for that statement that Pope John Paul II makes: abortion is not right in any circumstance. Since carrying out the baby will probably kill the mother, both rights to life are at stake, so the mother could choose since she also has a right to what happens to he own body. New…
In 2014, I was head over heels for the Catholic Church. A young adult going to mass every Sunday morning and then again Sunday night for “Teen” mass wasn’t abnormal in the city of Corpus Christi. I mean, the name of the city translates into “Body of Christ.” (Spoiler: “Teen” mass wasn’t as ‘Hip’ or ‘poppin’ as you might think it would be. The only difference was instead of a children’s choir it was a ragtag band playing slow Jesus songs.) But this Teen Mass was different, this was my last one…
"By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus" (Pope John Paul II). She was called “mother” by millions though she had no children of her own. This person is Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was baptized on August 26, 1910, given the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu and died on September 5th, 1997 (Gold). Her father, Nikolo, and her mother, Drana, emphasized the importance…
Ever since I got the opportunity to choose my theology project topic, “ Faith and Reason: Why Science and Catholicism are made for each other? Today many claim that the Church is anti-science, or that science is the “new religion” and Catholicism is no longer relevant. Explore the history of both the Church and science, and the history of these accusations. Explain why both need each other, ” I was excited for this project to begin. One thing I did not realize though was how extensive it was…
