    workers and made them take the drastic measure of creating a picket line in front of the Austin plant. This took the corporate campaign to a whole new level. P-9 picketers were preventing anyone from accessing the plants to the point where the National Guard had to be called to control the chaos and maintain order. What the picketers didn’t realize was that they were hurting themselves more than helping by hosting a picket line. If Hormel had any decency to negotiate with the workers before it was definitely lost by this act of disrespect for the company. Why would Hormel want to negotiate with people that are trying to hurt their business? The picket lines took a toll on the workers and their families. Many of them were struggling with loyalty to the Union as they really needed the income. Men were mentally unstable as they felt as though they weren’t doing what they needed to do for their families, which was to bring home an income and provide for them. Picketers had the option of crossing the picket line and accepting a lower wage, or basically losing their jobs for good as the company had no intent on hiring them back. Those that crossed were called “yellow dogs” and were screamed at as they crossed, but as much as it went against what they initially believed in, it helped them professionally in the long run. 571 workers were fired for honoring the picket lines hosted by P-9.
