    Lael Brainard was born in 1962, in Hamburg Germany to parents Al and Joanne Brainard. Al Brainard was a U.S. foreign-service officer who was stationed in Cold War Germany and Poland. Dr. Al Brainard received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Washington. He was one of the first US officials to develop relationships with Polish dissident movements that were instrumental in Poland’s transition to democracy. Ms. Brainard had an unusual upbringing by being Jewish and growing up abroad in Communist Poland and Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, she only returned to the United States to start her college studies. She has stated in many of her speeches that she was always aware that she was representing the United States abroad. Ms. Brainard earned a B.A degree from Wesleyan University, with honors, in 1983. She then received a Masters and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1989. Her doctorate focused on international trade and production. While at Harvard she was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship which is awarded to doctoral-level students. Dr. Brainard became an Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She worked at MIT from 1989 until 1994. In 1994 she became the Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. The NEC was established to advise the President on U.S. and global economic policy. Dr. Brainard…
