In the story of the last unicorn, she is naive in the beginning about who she is and really what the world is like. This provides the foundation of the story in the hero's journey of the unicorn. A unicorn learns from a butterfly who speaks in riddles that she is the last of her kind and that the other unicorns had been chased by the red bull. The butterfly states “You can find the others if you are brave”. They passed down all the roads long ago and the Red Bull ran close behind them and covered their footprints.” (pg 10) She can’t imagine she is the last unicorn left so she sets out to discover the truth on a journey that takes her far from the safety and comfort of the forest. She has spent years in a quiet solitude alone in her lilac forest. After hearing a conversation between a couple of hunters debating the existence of unicorns, she sets out into the unknown to find answers about who she is changing her life forever. “The unicorn leaves her forest, abandoning the animals and trees which depend on her. It is difficult, but she literally crosses the threshold, leaves the unicorn’s forest for the world of men.” (Hero’s Journey) Leaving the forest that the unicorn has been so content with is a big step in her ability to learn about herself. She begins the story very shy and not really in the position to go out on a journey, however the things she has learned by this point spark her curiosity. This is an unfamiliar journey bringing many harsh realities. It seems as though…
