As a kid, I did not read many books. I have read as many books as my current age, nineteen. As a result, expressing my thoughts was always difficult to write on paper. I struggled to write essays and I did not want to read books to make up for my lost time growing up. I knew there had to be certain ways to solve my problems and luckily I was able to find it through facing adversity. I was stuck on a coding project; I wanted to create a trivia question game to share with my friends through the C++ language. However, not knowing how to start the project was the biggest problem. I tried reading my programming textbook and reading some examples, but it just was not enough; I understood the concepts but I just did not know how to correctly type…

A time in my life when I had to overcome adversity was when I was in the second, third, and fourth grade. Everybody used to say I look like a boy and I have a deep voice for a girl. I was used to get so mad and be so sad because deep down I knew it was true, but I did not want people talking about me. My classmates would whisper, look at me, and laugh I hated it so much. It made me not like myself, the way I looked atleast, and less of a person as if I was empty inside. When it came time that I…

The day that would ultimately initiate the hunger for success was a day that I believed in myself and had faith in overcoming adversity. The week began in my freshman year when my close friends convinced me to try out for the Men’s Varsity Soccer team at my school. At the time, I had never played soccer a day in my life so, of course to anyone I was guaranteed to not make the team. Well, when I went to try-outs, I was struggling to keep up but I would always give it my all. Each day, I went to…

Adversity is a necessary obstacle that creates a better person once overcome. Everybody has experienced adversity at some point in their lives, and I am no exception. Sitting propped against my bed, a disheveled form of myself, I allowed my paintbrush to stray to the muddy colors for the fifth time, now mingled with salty tears. I resignedly raised my head and sighed, hands dropping down as if paralyzed. Tomorrow. I would look at it again tomorrow. Adversities are thought of extreme…

How do you react when you face adversity in your life? The carrot represents becoming weaker and soft, as the egg represents becoming harder and stiff, and the coffee bean represents changing the situation in full. Are you the carrot, egg, or coffee bean? I've had many occasions where I've reached in different ways, it just depends on the whole situation. It is not every day that we come across something in the archive that captures our attention and drives us wild with infatuation, but this actually happened to me when I came across Edward Browne’s The Persian Revolution, 1906-1911. The reddish-brown cover seems pretty plain and doesn’t invite the read into the text, but the books curb-appeal doesn’t really matter because the actual words written in the book will drive any historian insane. Browne’s message throughout the text is of a nation…

Written Words of What Not to Be Slave narratives are extremely valuable for today’s readers because they give a reader a first-person look inside the life of a slave. level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played…
