    In 1977, Gerald "Jerry" Sandusky established The Second Mile in State College, Pennsylvania. Sandusky was a former assistant football coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions. He was a prominent community leader who founded the charity to help disadvantaged and troubled children. With this role, Sandusky was constantly in contact with young boys and young college men. This program progressed to a statewide charity whose honorary board members included Paterno and other sports figures. Sandusky was hired in the late 1960's. Over a span of several years, he abused young boys and men. Sandusky preyed on his victims, by locating and grooming them for himself.
