Most people pay little attention to the writing utensils they use. If they lose a pencil or an eraser, they will just simply get a new one. For a long time I have tried to be different than other people. I have tried to be responsible for every pencil and eraser I owned. I made sure that there were exactly six pencils and one eraser in my pencil case every day. I was proud of being organized and taking good care of my writing utensils. Six months ago, I was working on a writing assignment. When I opened my pencil case, I could not see my same old eraser. Six-year-old children do not make good doctors. This statement may seem fairly obvious, but my six-year-old-self was ignorant to this fact. Sitting in the middle of a carpet floor of a white-walled classroom, my best friend Gracie and I were using mechanical pencils to give each other ‘shots’. After cleaning our arms, hands, thighs and any other body parts that desperately needed medical attention with hand sanitizer and tissues, we traded turns being the doctor and administering the ‘shots’.…

learned how to write cursive and now everything we write has to be in cursive. Except for math. But it doesn’t hurt to ask the teachers if we need to. I personally like to write in print rather than in cursive. “Of course you do. Everything you write needs to be in cursive except for math,” she responded. I mentally groaned. using different pencil marks to create these textures. I used the edge of the pencil to create a softer more blend-able texture and I used the tip of the pencil to create more definable textures and features. I created an A3 collage of four different animals; which exaggerated the beauty of all creatures and the contrast of the shades and structure of the animal added an extra exquisite and engaging aspect to the piece that would lead the viewer to see animals in the same way as I truly see…

Although the teacher does not always allow time each day to work on handwriting, she tries to fit handwriting in at least once a week for 30 minutes. During this time, the students work on upward curves, downward curves, and slants by writing certain letters/letter combinations in cursive. For the duration of the handwriting period, the teacher walks around and makes sure that each student is sitting properly and that they are holding their pencil and paper at the right angle. The few examples…
