In a manifesto written he says “All throughout my life, I was ridiculed, always beaten, always hated” However, friends of Luke’s testified that his mother was “just a normal mom”. There are surely reports that Luke was bullied by his peers, but there are also reports that stated he wasn’t mistreated as badly as he alleged, or as badly as other peers were bullied. Luke Woodson also claimed to be a part of a cult led by Grant Boyette, an older high school student. Witnesses testified that Grant Boyette would preaching satanic teachings to members of the group, later named “The Kroth.” Despite whether or not he was mistreated at home and at school, on October, 1 1997 Luke Woodham committed murder. On the morning of October 1, 1997 before heading to school, Luke Woodham reportedly viciously stabbed and beat his mother, Mary Woodham to death. On the stand, Woodham described killing his mom saying “I remember I woke up that morning, and I had seen the demons I 'd seen all the time when Grant had told me to do something. And he was telling me that I was nothing and that I 'd always be nothing; and I remember getting the knife, and I got a pillow. And I walked into my mother 's room.
