methods of passive cooling are shading, air movement gaps, and light colored roof coverings. Initially, shading is an effective solution against sunlight; although the benefits and drawbacks should be considered in terms of cooling and heating needs of the house. For example, a building which is located in warm climate might need shading more than one in cold. Another aspect of passive cooling is air movement which can provide fresh air to the home by ventilation. The window and door gaps in the plan of the house are placed based on the air flow that should follow a path through in all of the room. Reardon (2013) points out that, the best plan of a room to let the air movement in is the shape of a long rectangle. The key point is to locate the windows due to the direction of the wind. For instance, if the local wind from north façade blows a storm, it is not suitable to have opening such as windows. As Reardon (2013) states, different than cold night wind, “cool breezes” flow between afternoon and the evening when it is essential for ventilation in a building. Therefore, if it is a façade that takes nice cool breeze, then it should be arranged as to get maximum effect. The final aspect is using light colored roof covering such as EPDM or metal sheeting to reflect the sunlight, or applying a planted roof that can absorb the radiation. To summarize, it is an essential need in residential homes to be ventilated, and it is possible with these several methods of passive…

experiment there are constraints and requirements. Specifically in our Solar Oven Project we had budget, material, and performance constraints. The inside chamber, where the biscuit is cooked, must have a volume of 1000 cm3. In addition to that, the length of the window and the depth of the inside chamber must be at least 5 cm. The window must also be a square. The inside cooking chamber must be able to easily insert and remove the biscuit and hold the biscuit in place so when the oven is tilled…

You get solar energy only through direct sunlight. It is the most abundant, pure, non-toxic renewable energy source. There is sunlight every day that shines down on the earth that is 100,000 times greater than the whole world’s power capacity. The sun has always been a potential source of energy, but it wasn’t until the extreme cost rise of conventional energy that people finally took an interest. After more complex ways to use solar energy were discovered, more and more houses are being…

film solar cells. 5.1.2 Photovoltaic (PV) solar systems in Buildings: The PV solar cells combined together to make solar panels. These panels alone cannot light up the entire building with electricity. Additionally other components are also required to complete the whole complex process of conversion of solar energy into usable electric energy. The other components used in this process help in transmission and storage of the energy when required. This entire component system can be designed in…

(To calculate the building’s total source energy, the imported and exported energy is multiplied by the appropriate site-to-source conversion multipliers.) (EXAMPLE?) NET ZERO ENERGY COSTS The Net Zero Energy Costs means that the building has an energy utility bill of 0 monetary units, for example 0€, over the time of a year. There is also the possible case where the building produces more renewable energy that it consumes and the owners can sell it to the grid. NET ZERO ENERGY EMISSIONS The…

to power energy by using renewable resources that can make the world a better place. To begin, one of the first renewable resources that is converted into electricity is solar energy. Scientists have found a way to use the sun to help communities in different ways. Solar technologies were created to use the sun’s energy to provide heat, light, hot water, and electricity for many homes, businesses, and industries. For different needs in life, there are different solar collectors built. One is…

Energy plays an important part in social and economic develop. As the oil price sharply increases, it stimulates the step of researching the renewable energy field. The advantages of using renewable energy reduce the dependence on fossil fuel resources and carbon emission to the atmosphere. The total incoming solar radiation is about 3.8 million EJ per year and it can satisfy the entire energy demand if utilise correctly [2]. The use of solar energy is usually identified in two contexts: passive…

are defined as, “current technologies that have comparable or better performance, but do not emit carbon dioxide (Alternative Energy 2015).” Due to the harmful nature of the overuse of fossil fuels, scientists hope to replace them with four alternative energy resources. The four alternative energy resources are solar power, nuclear power, wind power, and hydroelectric power. Solar energy is derived from the sun. It is considered to be a valuable resource because, unlike fossil fuels, it is…

The consumption of energy has some impact on its surroundings regardless of energy source. The most used of nonrenewables, oil is the most focused on. The energy requirements could meet the projected population and economy using fossil fuels alone, only, however, if emissions are not taken into account (Lewis & Nocera, 2006). With emissions in mind, a cleaner source would be necessary, such as solar. Publishing work for the National Academy of Sciences, scientists rendered a large portion of the…
