a history of contact with an infected individual is often absent or unreliable (Hay, Levin, Deterding, & Abzug, 2014). It is transmitted via respiratory droplets, most commonly seen in the late winter or early spring months. Most of the cases occur in children between five to fifteen years old, which is school age, so it can be hard to really know how the child contracted the virus. Males and females are infected equally by the erythema infectiosum, and the infection is usually a self-limited illness that resolves without complications. Pathophysiology of Fifth Disease Fifth disease is viral infection that is caused by a single-stranded DNA virus called parvovirus B19 (O’Grady, 2014). The virus is transmitted from person to person by the respiratory droplet route, and a normal response to an infection by parvovirus B19 is the development of erythema infectiosum. An acute infection in a host who is immunocompetent, leads to a medicated cellular immune response with the production of specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies (Zelleman, 2015). The signs and symptoms of the infection probably arise due to the result of the immune complexes making their way into the skin and joints of the infected individual and not from the circulating virus. The incubation period from infection to initial onset of nonspecific symptoms ranges from 4- 14 days, and the rash and joint symptoms usually occur two to three weeks after the initial infection. Patients are most contagious in a…

and acquired. The natural mode of passive immunity is maternal antibodies received by infants via placenta (Baxter, 2007). While this is short-lived, it gives protection against diseases like measles, tetanus. Acquired form of passive immunity is induced artificially via antibodies administrations, purified from blood products of an immune individual to a non-immune individual. Shibasaburo Kitasato and Emil von Behring in 1890, successfully administered antibodies-antitoxin from an immune…

Some infections that I found online include but are not limited to: Bacterial vaginosis (BV), Cytomegalovirus, Listeriosis, Parvovirus B19 (fifth disease), and Toxoplasmosis. The infection that I found the most frightening is Group B strep (GBS). GBS, found in healthy women’s rectum and/or vagina, does not have any obvious symptoms and without the proper care this infection can be fatal for the baby during childbirth. In a womenshealth.gov article about pregnancy it is said…

Anemia in SCD patients can be caused by problems with the spleen known as splenic sequestration crisis and aplastic crisis. In splenic sequestration crisis the red blood cells become stuck in the spleen making it enlarge rapidly. Because these cells are trapped, there are fewer cells to circulate through the blood, resulting in anemia. Aplastic crisis occurs when a common infection known as Parvovirus B19 is caught. Parvovirus is a common infection in childhood also known as fifths disease, a…
