Researchers have found blue mussels to be contaminated with phytoplankton, therefore resulting in the possible paralytic shellfish poisoning. (Carsten et. al, 2014). Both phytoplankton and blue mussels are primitive resources in the food chain that which hundreds of organisms rely on in order to survive. With the spread of paralytic shellfish poisoning, hundreds of species including humans, are endangered, therefore resulting in a global threat in the declination of the world’s population. The impact of toxic chemicals on the health of organisms who inhabit the earth has been a widely discussed issue for decades. “The concentration of toxic chemicals found in blue mussel tissues is one of the fourteen indicators used by the CBEP to evaluate the environmental health of Casco Bay in State of the Bay’’ (CBEP 2005).
