    America Is In The Heart by Carlos Bulosan starts with Carlos’ dad plowing their fields in their barrio as Carlos thinks he sees what looks to be his brother, Leon, who was believed to be in Europe fighting in the war. The man is Leon, who Carlos hadn’t seen since he was a young child. At the time of 1913 the Philippines was going through radical social change. Farmers are filling the rural areas while the younger generation is in a movement of change in their homeland. The farm is only thing keeping Carlos’ family afloat. His returned brother Leon gets married but his wife is not a virgin, which means she has to return to her family. Allos, is Carlos’ name that his family call him in his farm home who lives with his father. Chapter 2 is a summary of Carlos’ family in the Philippines and tells where everyone is. His mother, younger brother and sister live in the local town where his brother goes to school. One brother serves in the Philippines service, which is part of the United States Army, like Leon. Another brother goes to high school so the family was really scattered around. It sums up how living in this household is. Carlos’ younger brother helps with the fields and Carlos’ takes care of the household. Carlos’ moves in the city of Binalonan where works until he has an accident and breaks several bones causing him to not work. His brother Amado takes care of him.
