Petrified Woman in Welty’s Petrified Man The Petrified Man takes place in the Deep South back in the 1930’s. Society at that time and place had very strong beliefs regarding the role of male and female and the institution of traditional marriage. I see Leota breaking the gender norm of the female by having feelings for another female and exhibiting tradition male "feelings" for a female. This story is interesting as the only mention of male characters during the whole story is the main character and beauty shop owner Leota’s unflattering description of her own husband and the other customer’s husbands. The characters that are interacting are two women in a beauty shop. Leota confides playing with her old, happily married customer Mrs. Fletcher throughout the story, doing her hair, meanwhile letting out bits and pieces of her interaction with her new interest Mrs. Pike. Leota is clearly unhappy in her marriage and looking for something new and different in her life, perhaps to step outside the “norm” of the traditional male female relationship. The story opens with Mrs. Fletcher, while getting her hair combed out, notices a bag of peanuts in Leota’s purse. Leota is quick to mention they were a gift from her new friend Mrs. Pike. It seems strange that she did not eat them; she just kept them in her purse. Her retort to Mrs. Fletcher was “Honey them goobers has been in my purse a week if they’d been in it a day. Mrs. Pike bought them peanuts” (Welty 369). Then she…

Colonel Hillandale was able to influence the people through a direct and personal touch. Instead of using money as a means to influence, he interacted with them on a human level by getting to know them. The local people embraced Hillandale, which changed their perceptions about Americans. The result was that the local people denounced the communists and Magsaysay won ninety-five percent of the province in the election. Later in the book, Colonel Hillandale uses his understanding of the…

reasons behind the absence of Wilson’s suspicion of Tom are merely assumptions on Pudd’nhead’s part. Even the “fact” that Tom was in St. Louis the night of the murder could have obviously been made up by Tom himself as a fake alibi excusing him from the case. However, Pudd’nhead naively does not suspect Tom Driscoll because of the abovementioned reasons. Although Wilson does make some foolish moves in the book, he redeems himself in many ways. For instance, he is very talented at palmistry and…

proposed three dimensions to explain personality: introversion-extraversion, stable-unstable, and psychoticism. Recent analysis has revealed the existence of the big five factors of personality: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (acronym: OCEAN).
