Even if Matanuska failed the state of Alaska could and did profit from the increase in population in the surrounding towns. The town of Palmer in particular grew to encompass many of the historic buildings of the Matanuska colony including the community center. The center is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is currently undergoing review as a National Historic Landmark. David Williams was chosen as chief architect for the Matanuska colony project in 1935. Williams was nationally known for his ability to create communities with designs that worked to speed up construction through the use of prefabrication. The Matanuska colony project was designed for both convenience and aesthetic purposes. The community center totaled nearly 30 buildings.
