rule and limited influence one can have once gone. This idea is significantly enhanced through the punctuation and word choice. The first word that contributes to this idea of transience is “desert” (Line 3). The word contributes to the feeling of emptiness and more importantly a deserted place. Not only does the word provide these feelings, the ellipsis that follow also continue to give the reader a feeling of being forgotten. As the poem continues there are words that persistently press the point of human’s transient nature. The poem announces this view by saying “Shattered” as well as “lies” (Line 4). This word choice conveys a very clear image of a someone who has been defeated and forgotten. The shattered represents the break of his power and to correlate with that is the word lies which represents the forgotten. This once powerful human is now forgotten and defeated. Overall, this is suggesting the idea that once humans have limited impact on the world once gone. As well, to enhance this idea is the statement, “Lifeless things” (Line 7), these words reinforce the idea that on passed on, a human’s impact is lifeless and does not contribute to this world. The end of the poem ensures these ideas through a strong comparison when the poet says “Boundless” (Line 13) and “Lone” (Line 14). These two words have importance to the message of the poem as they enforce that idea of having no significance. This have a big contrasting effect as what once was a strong and powerful king…
