In this essay, I will compare and contrast the different experiences, while describing what message Christina Rossetti is trying to formulate from these different experiences. Each character has a unique encounter with the Goblin men that has many different meanings to them and different messages being sent by the Author. The young, naïve, not very knowledgeable maid is known as Laura. Lizzie is known as the older, knowledgeable maid, and sister of Laura. Beings Maids brings us back to the book “How to be a Victorian” where they have a many maids in their homes doing daily work. Then there is Jeanie, she is used as a warning to Laura for what previously happened to her. I will further be going into more detail for each character about their experiences in this essay. Laura is the younger sister of Lizzie who is a little naïve, less knowledgeable, disobedient, and doesn’t really listen to Lizzie. She starts off the story right away by becoming curious of these Goblin Men. Unfortunately, she quickly becomes intrigued and starts to observe these men, look at them, and wonder what they have to offer when they make their signature call, “Come Buy, Come Buy.” As these Goblin men keep trying to get Laura to buy their fruit, Laura becomes more and more vulnerable, inching her way towards crossing over into the dark…

During Laura’s trip to the market, she did not have money to buy the fruit, instead she exchanged a lock of her hair for it. Laura was eager and did not have much self-control over her actions at the time. She was drawn to the fruit and the goblin men. Her experience is depicted as pleasant and compelling. For example: “(the fruit) ..sweeter than honey from the rock, stronger than man-rejoicing wine, clearer than water flow’d that juice; she never tasted such before..” When Laura was eating the…
