    One of the first escalations towards the Vietnam War was when the Viet Cong attacked a United States base killing 8 soldiers and wounding another hundred. Johnson delayed making a major decision on Vietnam while his consultants discussed what to do next. The advisors, including the Assistant Secretary of State William Bundy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommended a bombing the North Vietnam in order to separate the networks between them and the Viet Cong. This bombing would come in 3 stages and would be called Operation Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder lasted from March 2, 1965 to November 1, 1968 during which a great deal of bombs were dropped on North Vietnam.
