    Gesture Types by Function In the video, depictive gestures and deictic gestures were used by Vivian and Shane, who were the conversationalists. Depictive gestures are aimed to illustrate what happened, what is happening, and what will happen. It can be iconic, which would illustrate images of a scene. It could also be metaphoric, which is an abstract image connected to an abstract concept. When Vivian first began telling the “wrong way” story, she waved her hand from inside to outside while she said “one-way street” on line 24, and waved her hand from outside to inside while she said “two-way street” on line 27. These hand gestures may look like beats, which are vertical movements with no discernable meaning, unless it is attached to specific words in the conversation. She wanted to make a point that the one-way street and two-way street are opposite roads, so she gave an opposite gesture while describing it. Additionally, when she mentioned “one-way street” again on line 28, she gave one finger to illustrate and emphasize that it was a one-way street. Shane imitated honking the horn by pressing to the air and making a sound when he spoke about how he behaved improperly (line 39). He used gestures to re-create an image of a scene.
