The portrayal of irony is shown in two literary texts, a short story titled “Jacob's Chicken," by Milos Macourek and a poem titled “Porphyria’s Lover," by Robert Browning. Irony is an expression that is used to insinuate sarcasm; it typically signifies the opposite of what is said. In other words, irony is seen as appearance versus reality. The short story “Jacob’s Chicken” is about a passionate child who draws a unique chicken that others do not initially appreciate due to its unusual appearance. Specifically, Jacob’s teacher lacks appreciation for Jacob’s creation. Towards the end of “Jacob’s Chicken”, the drawing attracts the recognition of a zoo and people are amazed by the uniqueness of the chicken. Porphyria’s lover is deranged and ultimately murders Porphyria so that she can be his forever. His actions are vicious and it is evident through his actions that he lacks empathy. Throughout both of these literary pieces, Macourek and Browning utilize two types of irony: verbal and dramatic. The authors use tone and structure to convey both verbal, dramatic, and situational irony in their pieces. One approach of irony that is used in both the short story and the poem is through the tone of the narrator. Macourek uses irony and repetition for readers to better comprehend the story more efficiently. The teacher exclaims, “Jacob's chicken really looks more like a turkey, but then not quite, for it also resembles a sparrow and also a peacock…” (Macourek 1). This sentence is…
