key advantage would soon lead to militaristic applications of the technology. By the late 1950’s, the US had successfully used its PWR technology to create the USS Nautilus, the world 's first nuclear powered submarine (Knight, Judson. “Undersea”188-190). The USS Nautilus was tauted and displayed as a true revolution in naval technology. In the late 1950’s the Nautilus broke multiple water speed and submerged travel records. However, the most crucial feature and advantage of nuclear submarines was their ability to serve as mobile launchpads or both atomic weapons and conventional cruise missiles (188-190). With this renewed exigence to compete with American technology, the USSR then increased funding, albeit to a limited extent, for its nuclear energy programs. This led the Soviets to the conclusion that their reactors needed to be modified in a manner consistent with the American PWR, as the conventional Soviet graphite channel reactors proved unconventional for naval usage. After a significant amount of research and development, the USSR produced its first nuclear powered submarines in 1960 (188-190). The Soviet submarines, although lacking the speed and dexterity of American vessels, were publicly showcased to have superior missile launching systems. Nuclear submarine technology continued to advance through the late 1980’s, as nuclear reactors became more compact and efficient (188-190). During this decade, increased tensions mounted as the USA and USSR attempted to…

Germany created the “wolfpack” tactic; this is where German submarines merged together to create a convoy, basically a group of submarines in close proximity from each other. The submarines would leave about 25 to 30 kilometres of distance in between each, while maintaining radio communication with each other, the spacing between them allowed for the higher possibility of spotting a Canadian supply convoy or…
