His grandfather is very old and dependent upon others, and as his son, Wang Lung’s duty is to care for the old man throughout his old age until he dies. Wang Lung takes care of him throughout the rest of the story until he dies. “He had to lit the fire, boiled water, and poured the water into a bowl and taken it into the room where his father sat upon his bed, coughing and fumbling for his shoes upon the floor” (page 3). This idea that obligation to one’s family is important is also shown with the relationship between Wang Lung and his wife, O-lan.
