For example, in Latin American culture, skulls are tattooed following the loss of a loved one in association with Dia de los Muertos. In fact, sometimes people even get complete skeletons tattooed in order to commemorate lost loved ones, which is for many a way to accept that their lost loved ones are no longer corporeally with the living. Beyond skeletons, there are a specialized set of symbols associated with memorial tattoos in Latin American culture. A subset of these memorial tattoos are prison tattoos. For example, the three largest gangs in Mexico, the Mexican Mafia, La Nuestra Familia, and Los Vatos Locos, all have gang-specific memorial tattoos. The Mexican Mafia typical tattoo when a member has fallen is an eagle with a snake in its mouth. For La Nuestra Familia, the typical memorial tattoo is a sombrero laid over a blood-covered machete. Los Vatos Locos commemorate lost members via a triangle of three small dots. Beyond gang tattoos, there are also the infamous tear drop memorial tattoos. There are two types of tear drop tattoos. Open tear drops commemorate those who the tattooed person has killed, with the number of tear drops indicating the number of victims. Solid tear drops, on the other hand, indicate that someone close to the person wearing the tattoo has died, whether that be a family member, a close friend, or another gang member. The tattoos present in Latin American culture are very…
