too difficult to design a dirty bomb that would be able to deliver large enough doses of radiation to cause a large number of fatalities or cause immediate health effects. For this reason, experts agree that the intended goal would be to disrupt lives and cause fear among the population (Radiological Attack Dirty Bombs and other Devices, 2004, para.4). The most likely targets for an attach with an RDD is any place with a large concentrated population. Places such as shopping malls, sports arenas, train stations, amusement parks, or government buildings are all at risk for such an attack. In 2003, the U.S. Government, fearful of an attack during a college football game or during a New Year’s Eve celebrations, placed several undercover nuclear scientists with detection devices in five major cities. Individuals within the affected area run the risk of external contamination (when radioactive materials come in contact with an individual), internal contamination (when radioactive materials are ingested or inhaled), and radiation exposure. Depending on the dose of radiation those within the affected area are at risk for both short-term and long-term effects. Short-term effects include acute radiation syndrome and cutaneous radiation injury. Long-term effects include cancer, damage to DNA cells, prenatal radiation exposure, and mental health. Those at greatest risk for these are pregnant women and their fetuses, children, elderly individuals, and those with a lowered…

Survivalists: An American subculture The presence of survivalists or preppers as an American subculture can be traced back as early as the 1930’s. During World War II, as new homes and buildings were constructed, builders were adding bomb shelters to their structures. Occupants would then keep these bomb shelters or bunkers stocked in case of Nazi attacks. Advancing to the 1960’s and 1970’s, survivalist intentions changed due to differing circumstances. Preppers of this period were mainly…

While Rhetorically analyzing Terry Tempest Williams, “The Clan of One Breasted Woman,” I find that her main point is to attribute the government’s use of Nuclear Bomb testing, as the main reason why her family has cancer. She effectively argues, through her families’ personal history with Cancer, the government’s use of Nuclear Bomb testing needs to stop. Terry accomplishes this by bringing her audience in through emotional stories, personal branding and logical statements. Terry’s essay…

Pat Frank’s Alas, Babylon has more meaning than just a title of a random book. Randy and Mark Bragg, brothers, knew a nuclear war was coming but did not want anyone to know about it. Mark lived in Omaha while Randy lived in Florida. They would communicate back and forth to each other, via telephone or telegram, and “Alas Babylon” was their codename (Frank 14).
