    Although the design of a compass has changed over time it has always had the same four needles including North, East, South, and West. The first compass was simply a magnetized needle attached to a piece of wood or cork like thing. The middle card in the middle shows the directions. As the needle would settle, the marked end would point toward magnetic north.
