Music therapy is the purposeful use of music and its elements by an accredited music therapist to aid in personal development, whether that be mental, physical, emotional or spiritual to anyone. Music therapy interventions such as improvisation, listening, singing, discussing and movement to the music are used to accomplish individualized goals which can then be transferred into other areas of life. Music therapy can be both in a passive or active form, all approaches fall into one category. During active therapy, the therapist and patient make music with their voice, instruments or other objects which would allow the patient more liberty to express themselves through the music. Some examples of active music therapy would be Nordoff Robbins MT, Neurological and cognitive-behavioural. Passive therapy on the other side of the spectrum emphasizes the client’s response to music. In this form of therapy, the client might listen to the music and discuss, draw or reflect on how it makes them feel. A perfect example of passive therapy would be Guided Imagery in Music. In my opinion, there are so many fundamental elements of music therapy. However, of everything I have learned so far as a music therapist in training it is that the one element I definitely want to incorporate into my practice is enjoyment. It is essential for your client to feel comfortable and relaxed in a therapy setting as it allows them to feel safe to express themselves. This is a key element that…
