    [Odysseus’ boat]. A giant wave washed the ship stern foremost back to shore” (Cyclops 395-399). Even though Odysseus was relieved to continue his voyage, his major flaw includes letting pride hinder him. Odysseus already has physical obstacles to overcome, but he keeps letting his pride continue to slow him down. So, even though Odysseus was compelled to continue the journey by the thought of seeing his kingdom and family, Odysseus was still human and let petty things like pride get in his way of getting home. If it takes the thought of getting home to motivate a supposedly fictional character, what does it take to motivate a human to embark on a dangerous journey? Kira Salak was the first woman to row an inflatable kayak down the Niger River for 600 miles to Timbuktu. But, obviously, the journey did not come without mental and physical hindrances. So, what was her motive to go on this journey in the first place? She was persuaded to do this after researching the same journey taken by Scottish explorer Mungo Park in the 19th century. ¨And it´s all the guarantee I have for this trip- that an obsessed 19th century adventurer did what I would like to do” (Salak 39-41). Besides completing a journey someone from the 19th century conquered, Kira wanted to be the first woman to complete Mungo Park’s journey as well.
