white man. The deputy director of the department and main focus of the show is Leslie Knope, a white woman. Not only can those roles be looked at with scrutiny because they leave the lower ranking jobs to the non-white characters, Leslie Knope does the vast majority of the work for the department. She enjoys the workload and often initiates her own projects but it is something to be said that even though Ron does little work, he is still in charge. In addition to that, Ron is a self identified libertarian, journalist Charlene Haparimwi describes Ron as “a red meat eating, deer hunting, sax playing libertarian in a very liberal show” . However, Ron’s character is more dynamic that he appears to be, Haparimwi reflects on Ron by saying “though Nick Offerman’s character [Ron Swanson] has completely opposing views to Leslie Knope he is not written as just a stereotypical man’s man bureaucrat. He is a feminist who believes and admires the strength of women” (Haparimwi). This can be seen by Ron’s love interests, both of his ex-wives (both named Tammy) have sharp and confident personalities, which Ron prefers, rather than tries to change. Leslie is a very strong female character with ambitions to hold a higher role in the government. She is very open about her admiration for powerful female leaders and has twelve portraits of women who inspire her in her office, ranging from astronaut Sally Ride, to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Throughout the show Leslie faced…

I chose this theme because while Nick was growing up, he constantly questioned whether there was a purpose to his life, and he wondered why he was not “normal,” like everyone else. From the ages of eight until twelve he thought about killing himself because he felt like he was such an outcast from all of his peers, and he also felt like a burden to his parents because they practically had to do everything for him. He even attempted to commit suicide by drowning himself in the bathtub.…

Optimism Brought on by Cartoons As a little girl I remember sitting in front of the television watching cartoons. Cartoons, a place where anything was possible, even a flying school bus. Growing up my memories add my sister sitting there next to me, the screen showing talking ponies instead of the old school bus. Even as the cartoon changed, it still had its own message to present, whether it be about the solar system or the magic behind friendship. In Nick Flynn’s lyric poem “Cartoon Physics,…

Irrationality in Love in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream Love is a central motif in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, as evidenced by the actions and agency of the main characters in the play. According to Hutton (290), many critics feel that Shakespeare offers the audience a choice between the rational and irrational. The theme of love brings out this choice capably, as demonstrated by the perception that rational love triumphs over irrational love, as the young lovers settle for…
