This music has accompanied the steampunk aesthetic as it rose from a small series of conferences in New Jersey to the world spanning genre of music, literature, and fashion it is today, with conferences and meetups occurring multiple times per month globally. The internet also allows for the revival of genres and albums long relegated to obscurity. The 1998 album In an Aeroplane Over the Sea by the indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel released to rave reviews from critics, and strong vinyl album sales, albeit strong in the pre vinyl revival period is not equivalent to modern vinyl sales, as vinyl was a much more enthusiast product in that era. Neutral Milk Hotel’s lead singer, Jeff Mangum had a subsequent mental breakdown after the release of the album, and the band broke up. The album was rejected from the mainstream due to its arguably god-awful vocals and poorly played instruments, as well as the entire album being a metaphor for Mangum wanting to go back in time and marry Anne Frank.
