    Nerd Definition Essay

    • 799 Words
    • 4 Pages

was, “You’re such a nerd!” This offended me and made me feel self conscience because when I think of the word nerd, I think of someone who is socially awkward. The word nerd has two different meanings, one being, “a person considered to be socially awkward, boring, unstylish, etc.,” and the other being, “an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit (dictionary.com).” Both of those definitions are not like me. I am a very energetic and talkative person and I do many things that involve being social. Someone posted a question asking what people thought of when they heard the word nerd and one person said, “They would be socially inept. Not necessarily unattractive but because of their inept manner perhaps their clothes are not fashionable and even perhaps they don't wash enough. I think that they might often be overly-obsessed with a certain solitary pursuit. This might often be intellectual but not…

    Nerds Vs Snobs Essay

    • 1012 Words
    • 5 Pages

save one of two people, one a snob, the other a nerd. You know that each have their strengths and weaknesses. So who do you pick and trust with your life? Both snobs and nerds are generally chastised by society. Snobs are hated for their ‘’I think I am better than you attitude’’, and nerds are hated for their inability to relate with ‘’normal people’’. I am of the persuasion that being a nerd is a better choice as a zombie-slaying best friend because they are more loyal to their social groups,…

In a 1990 article published by the New York Times, “America Needs Its Nerds” by Leonid Fridman, Fridman argues that people that are intellectually curious are degraded and disrespected in America. If we do not begin to prioritize intellectualism, America as a country will not be able to keep up with the rest of the world. In the first section of the article, Fridman establishes that the terminology people in America use to refer to the intellectually curious is derogatory. Fridman references…

In his critical essay, “America Needs Its Nerds”, Leonid Fridman attacks the rampant anti-intellectualism in American pop culture through juxtaposition and rhetorical questions in order to reform the misdirected society into one that upholds “nerds” so that the country can be successful in its competition with foreign countries that already have that mindset. Furthermore, Fridman elaborates on the problem by demonstrating the derogative origin of “geek” and its unjust application to the…

No one went to the same high school. Though a person may have physically been in the same building as another, their overall views of what high school is will always vary. While one may have seen high school as the best four years of their life, the other may already repressed the memories of it. A jock, nerd, drama starter, and social outcast would all define high school in very different ways. Though these student archetypes are quite cliché, they are extremely real and exist in almost every…

When we think of the words nerd and geek, we think of a smart person with freckles and thick-framed glasses. They are usually bullied by the athletic people of a school and are at the lowest rung of the social ladder. But why do we also think about that same person being harmed and ridiculed? Why can’t we praise their intelligence and use it to improve our society? These questions are argued in Leonid Fridman’s “America Needs Its Nerds.” In order to do this, Fridman uses rhetorical strategies…

went a little crazy and I had enough of dealing with it. I learned a lot from this bad relationship that I now apply to my current one with the other girl. There was this other girl, a gorgeous brainiac who was nerdy and different. She became one of my best friends because contrary to popular belief I was a nerd at heart too, I was just trapped in the body of a division one football player. After the fallout of the crazy volleyball player I turned to the nerd and we have been dating ever since.…
