Spice Islands. Using dead reckoning, the astrolabe, the magnetic compass, and other various navigational instruments, Columbus landed on the island of Hispaniola, believing it was the Asian coast. Dead reckoning was Columbus’s primary method of determining location. This technique uses the course and distance already traveled to verify the current position of the ship. Another common tool, the astrolabe, calculates the latitude according to positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Today, the vast majority of navigators use radars and automatic identification systems to keep track of their vicinity. Radars determine the accurate distance of a ship from land, surrounding ships, and random objects at sea such as icebergs and oil rigs. In addition to using radio transmitters to send and receive messages, the automatic identification system pinpoints the exact location and statistics of nearby ships. These useful navigational advances would have allowed Columbus to know that he landed in what is now the present day Caribbean, instead of what he presumed to be Asia. Another development is the modern gyro compass, which is superior to the fifteenth century magnetic compass because of its ability to always find the correct north position. Unlike the magnetic compass, the gyro compass is not hampered by external magnetic fields. If Christopher Columbus would have had these advantageous navigational developments, he would have known that his ships landed in the Western Hemisphere instead…

The average water volume calculated for the burette was 10.029 mL, which is 0.029 mL from the actual water volume of 10mL. Because, 0.029 mL was the smallest difference from the actual 10 mL, it is considered the most accurate piece of equipment. On the contrary, the least accurate instrument, the graduated cylinder, provided an average water volume of 9.672 mL, which is 0.328 mL from 10 mL, the largest difference presented from the three instrument…

hybrid can get the ball into a higher trajectory even if they have the same loft degree. Hitting the golf ball with a hybrid can also cause it to land more softly on the green. Shorter and Lighter than Woods Compared to a wood, hybrid has shorter length and is commonly quite longer or equal to the iron it substitutes. For instance, the 2-iron it replaces is commonly 39 inches in length while a usual 5-wood is longer. Its normal length is 42 inches. Golf players usually find it hard to…

The physics behind a good golf swing are simply mind-boggling. After setting aside the fact the body is required to coil and recoil in ways the body wasn't intended to do, a golfer goes through the motion of a golf swing in the hopes they can consistently make contact with a golf ball within a 1/2 inch margin of error on a golf club face that measures 4 inches long. That's asking a lot from science. The good news is that a novice golfer can learn to use body and muscle memory training to create…

The late Arnold Palmer, a four time masters champion, to name a few, once said, “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” This quote is the very anthem of my feeble golf career. It may look easy when pros like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus perform at the highest major championships, but when you actually set your hands on the clubs, your entire point of view on the sport changes in an instant. Such letdowns like this one are abundant for amateurs like me, but this one was…

The rules of golf allow for the player to have fourteen clubs in the bag. The most complete set you can have in your bag is to have seven irons, three woods, a putter, a hybrid, a wedge and a chipper. A wood golf club should be used is there is a great distance between the position of the ball and the hole. Most “wood” golf clubs today aren't…
