    At Boise State University, it is not uncommon for students to take a class in Basque Studies sometime in their college career. Students may even earn a minor in Basque studies at Boise State. Only a few universities offer these unique courses in the U.S. The Basque studies program at Boise State is a multidisciplinary study of the Basque people while exploring language, history, politics, and economics to foster lifelong learning. “Euskaldunak,” is what the Basque call themselves which means, “one who speaks Basque.” The Basque country runs along the 43th parallel at the Western edge of the Pyrenees Mountains which is about the same parallel as Boise. It is made up of seven provinces in France and Spain. About three million people live in the Basque country and about 60,000 people of Basque descent live in the U.S. The largest concentration of Basque Americans resides in Boise according to the Basque Studies Department at Boise State. The vast majority of Basques come from the province, Bizkaia according to the Basque Community of Boise. Many Basques came to the U.S. to work as sheepherders, as many English and Scottish had sheep and needed help in Europe so that is what a lot of them did in America. Glorianna Cortabitarte, a Spanish teacher who is also from Basque descent, said, “My father came over to America to work with the sheep in Idaho.
