While there is debate on whether one causes the other is unclear, there is some sense that having wider social connections and relationships are an important part of being happy.” (Maslow, 1987, pp. 20-21) Maslow attempts to explain this in what is known as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The middle block in the pyramid represents ‘love and belongingness’: the need for friendship, intimacy, trust and acceptance, receiving and giving affection and affiliation -- being part of a group. Greek Life is a way to fill that psychological need. A 2012 study made by the NIC or North-American Interfraternity Conference estimated that about 14% of incoming college freshman intend to join a sorority. That is a a good amount of girls wanting to join such a controversial group so there must be something motivating them. Going along with the psychological needs theory a closer look proves that sense of confidence, gender identity and self-symbolization might have something to do with it. Young women already affiliated in a sorority typically exude confidence. By finally discovering a sense of belonging, your self-esteem rises and you feel more confident. Young women joining the recruitment process see this and are in ‘awe’ of such self-confidence. This is an attractive benefit to those suffering with insecurities or nerves. When most people…
