Tommie Smith's most historically significant moment was in the race at the Mexico City Olympic Games of 1968. He won the race and set a new 200-meter record of 19.83 seconds (U.S. Olympic Museum) Before the race, Tommie Smith and John Carlos only mentioned a few times how they would protest and represent their own experiences (Smith et al). When they got to the podium, they had both taken off their shoes to represent poverty within the African American group in the U.S. (Myles). John Carlos has unzipped his jack to represent Americans who work just to live. They both wore something around their neck to call attention to black men who had been lynched, with Carlos wearing beads and Smith wearing a scarf (Smith et al). They each wore one glove as their heads were down to officially start the silent protest. Smith raised his right fist to express black power, while Carlos raised his left fist to indicate black unity. This was an influential moment for civil rights (Myles). While the national anthem played, Tommie thought to himself, "We had to be seen because we were not being heard." Smith et al. The consequences of this protest were severe for both Smith and Carlos.
